Twitch For Musicians

A Step-by-Step Guide to Producing a Livestream, Growing a Fanbase, and Making Money as a Musician on Twitch

Independent artists are finding new audiences, creating meaningful relationships with those audiences, and making money by livestreaming on Twitch. In this course, I show you what livestreaming is all about, how to do it technically, and how to be successful.

You might think Twitch is all gamers playing games live for other gamers, but creative arts are also really popular and the music category is a big part of that.

Some reasons why now is a good time to start streaming on Twitch:

  • Livestreaming is Fun.
You play music and talk to viewers. It's like busking, but from the comfort of your home, on your schedule.
  • Music on Twitch is Not Saturated
There is a healthy music community on Twitch, but not so big that you'll be buried by the popular streamers. You can still get discovered, and you can rise up with the music category as it continues to grow.
  • Fan Engagement is Off the Hook
Streaming is all about engagement. You'll stream for hours, people will watch for hours, they'll request songs, you'll play those songs, you'll talk with each other. This creates real fan relationships that you can leverage into growing your email list, socials, Spotify plays, etc.
  • You Can Make Real Money
On Twitch, viewers can pay to subscribe to your channel, spend virtual currency on you, and make donations - and they DO. Twitch makes it fun for viewers to support you. Some streamers use streaming as a side hustle, and some quit their jobs and do it full time.

Here's the problem with Twitch - it's DIFFICULT to figure out.

You'll use at least THREE different platforms and TWO monetization systems to build your channel and do the livestreams. There are a lot of explainer videos on YouTube on how to use individual features, but nothing existed that put it all together until my course.

I make building a channel EASY. I tell you exactly what software and services you'll need, how it all works, and how to troubleshoot problems.

I tell you WHY livestreaming works and how to do it. It's not like any other social content platform. In fact, most of the best practices guidelines are opposite. Nothing you know about Instagram or YouTube will help you with livestreaming. More importantly, you need to understand why people watch and how to deliver that.

I tell you HOW to build an audience and keep them coming back. It's not enough to go live. You need a strategy. I give you that strategy.

I answer your questions. There is a Q&A message board in each section of this course. Ask me anything. I'm here to help.

I update the course as livestreaming tech changes. It changes a lot. There was one major update of a streaming service you'll need to use that came out two weeks after I launched this course. I keep up with this, so you won't be learning out-of-date material.

Not ready for a course?Twitch For Musicians is also a book (click here to buy). You won't get updates or be able to ask me questions, but it has all the basic info you need.

Let's get you live!

Twitch Interactive, Inc. and its affiliates are not affiliated or associated with this work, have not sponsored or endorsed this work, have not authorized use of any third party content, and do not approve, sponsor or endorse any third party products and services described in this work. They didn’t hire me to create this and they haven’t reviewed it. This is entirely created from my experience and observations from using Twitch and other livestream services.

Please note: I can teach you how to stream, but I can't guarantee success. As with anything, that's entirely dependent on how much effort you put into streaming and how well you connect with an audience. I can shorthand the whole process for you and answer all your questions. I love getting artists into livestreaming and hope to learn as much from your journey as you do from me.

Hi, I'm the creator of Twitch For Musicians. I manage Megan Lenius, one of the top indie artists on Twitch, launched and produce a channel for Marina V, and have guided other indie artists on starting their own successful channels. I've spent my career on the digital side of the music industry, most recently working directly with startups on business development and strategy. I've led a trade association that supported companies putting entertainment on mobile phones and have worked on the digital strategy side of the RIAA, a trade association for US record labels.

I started in livestreaming in 2016 with a channel on YouNow. I've spent a whole career working with startups and others in digital music and had never seen a social content platform where creators were paid directly by their viewers. After streaming, I understood why viewers would pay for content that was essentially the same as what they see for free on YouTube. I saw the same thing happening with music on Twitch, and knew it wasn't a teenager fluke. This had legs.

I love talking about livestreaming, I love how technology creates opportunities for artists, and I love helping artists grow using that technology.
